Biography:

Born in Cork, Ireland in 1951.  Lived in Ireland and Canada as a child.

From 1972 to 1995 raised four children and was involved in a number of organisations on a voluntary basis; in particular, as Secretary of the Courthouse Committee, which successfully restored the old courthouse in Tinahely, Co. Wicklow, turning it into an Arts Centre.

In 1995 was offered a place as a mature student at Grennan Mill Craft School and then trained as a production potter on the Crafts Council of Ireland Pottery Skills Course.  In 1997-98 worked as Caretaker/Technician in the Craft School with use of the Ceramics Studio culminating in first solo exhibition in June 1998.

Methods of Working:

Paperclay Sculptural Forms:

The 'Standing Forms' are built over formers made from dowels and cardboard tubing stuffed with bubble wrap or newspaper. For the 'Pods' I use various sized balloons.  I texture individual sections of clay and gradually build up the surface and form.  I allow it to dry enough to hold the shape, then I either deflate the balloons; cut the long enclosed forms in the middle and gently pull out the former, reassembling with some more pieces of clay which I secure over the join; or ease the tapered former out of the flared standing forms.  The pieces are then bisque fired and given a second oxide firing.

Wet Fired Forms:

This was a method I developed for my Degree.  I weave formers form willow and other hedgerow materials or make formers similar to the paperclay Standing Forms.  I cover these with a mixture of clay/hay (see Aberystwyth page), porcelain slip and other additions.  I then fire this work soaking wet.  There is an article about this method in 'ceramicsTECHNICAL' No. 13, the international ceramics magazine published in Australia.

Raku-fired Work:

Raku is a special technique for firning pottery, developed in 16th Century Japan  Modern Raku as practised in the West uses the same techniques as the traditional Japanese, but is more flamboyant in form and colour.

It is fired in a small kiln, which reaches between 900-1000 degrees in less than an hour.  The pots are then taken hot from the kiln using a long handled tongs.  The glaze is still molten and they are put immediately into a bin containing sawdust or other combustible material.  The red hot pots ignite the sawdust and the resulting smoke and flames react with the glaze to produce random colour variations and strong metalic lustres on the glazed surface.  The unglazed area of the pot turns black from the smoke treatment

Small Wheel-thrown Raku pots:

I also make a range of small thrown raku pots - each one is slightly different and range in price €20 - €30.  It is the nearest I get to production work!
